I didn't make it yesterday. I was tired. I worked hard on school and other stuff. Then I just had to lay down. My back has been injured.
Today I was eating something that made me remember.
I haven't had my grandma's Southern Fruit Salad since I was 12. I made it just now to remember.
No wonder I'm fat. This is a red apple and a banana, peeled and chopped, tossed with a couple tablespoons of mayonnaise That's it. And I used to eat those ... constantly.
What else did I eat a lot of as a child?
Grilled cheese sandwiches. 2-4 at a meal.
Slices of American Cheese.
Slim Jims.
Wienners, sometimes raw and cold.
Vienna Sausages.
Cottage Cheese with peaches or pears.
Shredded cheddar in peaches.
Cheese dip and chips. The cheese dip was made of velveeta or slices of American melted with salsa.
Ramen noodles aplenty. Chicken flavor. Cooked, drained, THEN seasoned.
Fast food. Lots of it. Double-cheeseburgers.
Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. (Stop making that face. They are delicious. I thought I'd hate them too)
Macaroni and cheese. My grandma's way. VERY cheesy.
Whole black olives
Fresh fruits and nuts. We had a pecan tree, a huge blueberry bush and some apple and plum trees.
Cheese grits
Rice and brown gravy
Bologna, raw or fried, on a sandwich or by itself. With Mustard if not fried. Plain if fried.
Hotdogs. Ketchup only.
Maw's fried bread ... never got her to teach me that recipe. Damn.
Broccoli and cheese
Pizza. Lots of kinds. Crispy Tasty Totinos were my constants tho.
Things I HATED to eat as a child that I love now:
Tuna
Mashed potatoes
Pork Chops
Saurkraut
Spinach
Raw Broccoli
Sushi (refused to try it then but was REALLY hard-core against it)
Soft cheeses (Such as Goat cheese or cream cheese)
That's all.
I know it's small and a lame read... but it actually sparked a lot of memories to recall what I ate then.
This Southern Fruit Salad sucks. *Stares down at it* ... not eating this.
Uggh. Probably won't make this for ANOTHER 14 years.
Oh well. Worth the memories.
sometimes remembering foods we ate is interesting. Yay for foods eating sparking a lot of other memories
